We always see a few chuckwallas in the shell canyon area but they were more skiddish then usual so this is the only pic I was able to get. We did see 4 here.
My daughter found a chuckwalla under a rock but when we flipped it was gone but did find this little scorpion.
Best find of the day, leopard lizard! I was able to get out and walk up to it take pics and catch it without it running away. One of my favorite lizards for sure, wish I could see more of them.
Finally started seeing desert iguanas and was able to get out of car and get a few pics of this one. We must have seen between 30-40 total throughout the day. Also saw a few whiptails and utas but did not get any pics.
Based on the warm temps I took a trip to the desert with my daughter and her BFF. On the way down into desert saw a few granite spinys and chuckwallas sunning on rocks and maybe a few utas and desert iguana, but first pics were of this little zebra tail on the back loop road in Ocotillo. It let me get pretty close before running away. In fact we saw only zebra tails for a while but did not get any more pics on my phone.
2nd of 2 caught for pics.
Flipped the same scorpion as last week under the garbage can, took a few pics and out it back under.
With a forecast of 93 I figured I would try my luck in the desert again, stopped at rocky hillside west of ocotillo hoping for collared lizards but only saw a few side blotch. Then hit the back roads but only saw a few side blotch and one desert iggy but no picks. Then stopped at community park and flipped a few side blotch but no geckos or snakes this time. Here is 1 of 2 that I caught for pics.
After the park we continued on the roads and found our first gecko of the season on a road, 3rd of the night. This one actually ran towards me and jumped on my foot. We did find a 4th gecko DOR but did not take any pics. Temp was in mid to upper 70's still.
First sidewinder of the season, this one surprised me when I flipped a medium size rock at the park. It's amazing how much they blend in with their surroundings.
First herp of night was this gecko which I believe is the same one I flipped a few days ago, this time it was out open so got a few pics. Also saw one more in a sprinkler housing but did not get any pics.
After a good first day in desert I decided to try my luck at night so I took the kids and went road cruising through ocotillo and anza borrego. First find of night was the big scorpion under a garbage can at the community park, I'm pretty sure it is a hairy scorpion.
It's getting to be that time of year again so I headed to desert to see if any early herps moving. Started with a drive on back roads around ocotillo but only saw utas sunning. Temp was mid 70's. Then made my usual stop at the community park and flipped the cutest gecko under a garbage can and took plenty of pics.
One of a few of these found this night road cruising.
