Several seen on Kaibab Trail hike
A pair soared overhead as we hiked Kaibab Trail down to Colorado River
Plant is a shrub to a small tree (3m tall in places), with shreddy bark. New woody growth, foliage and flowers all sticky-glandular to the touch. Leaves are 3-5 lobed. Flowers are white, with around 5-7 seeds per flower head. Seeds have long spiraling 'tail' with plumose bristles.
Similar in appearance in this area to Fallugia paradoxa (bottom sides of leaves covered with orange pores, more seeds / flower) and Cercocarpus / Mountain mahogany species (similar seed heads, different leaves),
The namesake tree on Cedar Ridge in the Grand Canyon looks like Utah Juniper to me.
