Lace Lichen is vibrantly alive between rain showers. It does not harm the host tree, in fact it captures nutrients from the atmosphere that are then delivered to the tree's roots by rainfall. Ramalina menziesii occurs in places with clean air, where nitrogen oxides and ozone in smog are absent. Like many other lichens, it has an odd chemical pathway that absorbs sulphur, removing it from Earth's atmosphere.
