On rotten log in coast redwood forest
On Eucalyptus in Quail Hollow Ranch County Park
Bird is a large finch, with an elongated bill. Lower mandible crosses outside the upper mandible to the birds left side. Cheeks gray, upper head dirty red. Breast rusty red, solid, no streaks. White on lower belly. Undertail coverts light with brownish triangular markings. Wing dark, no wing bars. Upper back not seen. The bird was flocking with pine siskins. Observed through Nikon ED spotting scope, perched on black locust tree in mixed oak,
Douglas fir, ponderosa pine forest with lots of houses
Faint yellowing , faintly phenolic, small frb with small annulus

Apparently a purple slime mold? Growing on rotten log on the side of the trail between the parking lot and Bennett Creek.
