Description

The Dolloff Cave Spider (family Tetragnathidae) is one of the rarest spiders in North America. Until recently, it was known only from the Empire Cave system; a small series of caves near the University of California Santa Cruz campus. Unfortunately, this left them highly susceptible to vandalism and injury as people would party in the caves.

Recently a few additional populations have been found in nearby caves in both Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties. The individuals in these photos are representatives of a newly discovered population deep in the Santa Cruz mountains.

They are exceptionally large spiders (the largest could easily wrap their legs around a peach pit) and they make broad-meshed orbwebs with an open hub. They are known to feed on moths and harvestmen, but we also found one incident of cannibalism

I saw quite a few of these tiny bugs on Yellow Star Thistle flower heads. I'm hoping that they are the type of bug that makes life hard for these invasive plants. Little help?
