Interesting life/death specimen
There is a small grove of these trees on either side of a major trail junction on the southwest side of Laurelwood Park, near the base of the mountain. I tried to get a few pictures, but I am not sure even to family on this one.
With my binoculars, I could see underneath one, and saw the pores
Very firm. Nice squirrel-bite in the top. No smell. In a backyard near citrus, birch, roses, plum.
Do these guys ever stop flying?
Belted Kingfisher (Megaceryle alcyon), male, Marina Lagoon, Foster City, San Mateo County, California - 25 November 2013. Apparently males can have some rufous feathers on the lower breast, which can be seen here...
In the middle, doing it's best to look like a rock.
Cacklers are in the front, Canadian behind.
Domestic swan, has lived in the lagoon for years.
Very large clumps just below the dam. On dead either alder or cottonwood
Two went overhead, seemingly flying together. It was a male/female pair, as the size difference was obvious.
FINALLY I saw a Coyote on my regular walk up here! It had taken over a year for one of the commoner mammals to show itself. This dog looked healthy.
