It was a first for me to come out here and see them in non-breeding plumage...
Would love to solve this Purple/Cassin's/House dilemma of knowledge...
The most I'd ever seen out here...
Probably nearing the end of the flight. Most abundant lep out here on the Saltgrass...
Went out here to work on my birds. Everything is SO DRY - like you're gonna set off a fire just by the scuff of your shoes.
Two different morphs of Harmonia axyridis. Thought the black and red one was Chilocorus until I realized Chilocorus doesn't have white spots on its head.
Found this one on fennel eating a syrphid fly
Saw about 16 on the fennel at Radio Beach, from itty bitty 1st instars to big fat ones that looked ready to pupate. Didn't see any chrysalises.
Lots of the guys at the lake. The brown ones are juveniles.
This bird was feeding at dusk, diving into the water from about 15 feet up and immediately flying away... Presumably after missing its prey. Two long talk feathers, and its head would hang down far below its wings as it searched for food.
