Description

I've been around of coyotes, usually seen from cars or heard in the middle of the night from my bedroom when I was a teen. Today was my first experience with this predator up close... While watching children. We had taken a trip to my car so I could get my rain pants and boots and just as I was finishing up and locking the car the boys excitedly but quietly pointed toward the road, "Look! A coyote!" "Let's see if we can see it as it goes up the road," I suggested. Yes! We saw it through the trees! They expressed that they wished that their friends could see it, too, and I thought briefly about running on the parallel gravel road to let the others know, but realized the coyote was ahead of us and would travel much faster. Right after we turned to leave we looked again and... The coyote was suddenly right in the middle of the meadow! It saw us as we had seen it, and I had the kids stand on top of the little fence to get a better look as it hunted unsuccessfully for gophers. It drew closer and finally I told them to stay still and if I needed to I would scare it away. Fortunately it came no closer and walked toward the gravel road, leaping into the forest as it heard others coming down the path. Then, properly attired, we took a walk through the wet, wet meadow to share our exciting story.
