I spent 5 minutes photographing this wasp on what I assume is some kind of bee, which appeared long dead - they were on the asphalt parking lot. The wasp circled me a few times to check me out. Fascinating show but a total mystery as to what was going on.
Caterpillar observed in the dunes near silver beach bur (Ambrosia chamissonis), pink sand verbena (Abronia umbellata), and American dune grass (Elymus mollis).
Clumped together and crawling all over each other in shallow depressions in the dunes.
Observed on coastal hedge-nettle (Stachys chamissonis).
According to CalFlora observations, this species is known from other beaches in Marin but no known records from Muir Beach.
Visiting a flower of yellow sand verbena (Abronia latifolia).
Washed up from the ocean several on the shoreline today
