In Marin County, this species is only known to occur at this location.
I can't figure out which race this bird belongs to. It's too pale on the chest and back to be the sooty, yet the bill is too small for the big-billed race. I was surprised to see it in scrubby serpentine habitat near chaparral.
found under a rock on serpentine soil
tiny little flowers - just a few millimeters across and about 2 inches high
not doing too well on the serpentine soils; we only saw a couple of these and both were discolored
