Several of these flying very low above open soil of trail, many occasionally landing on bare soil for 20 seconds or so. Occasionally two would seemingly collide and tussle in flight

I saw a big herd of these elk at Point Reyes National Seashore.
I was hiking on the California coast, and these really shiny blue berries were in the coastal forest I was hiking in.
either S. americanum or S. nigrum - both occur on the trail according to the Marin Native Plant Society checklist.
