Thatching Ant Mound - the ants add and remove sticks and grass to maintain internal thermal regulation
Seen on the slickrock near the rim overlook, Capitol Reef National Park..
This may be a Formica obscuripes Thatching Ant mound. I have seen this same mound over in the Yakima area on Umtanum Ridge.

Fairly common in early spring in northern Utah farmlands. I surprised to see this species on a hike in an arid part of Capitol Reef NP. However, this individual fly-catching in an orchard near the Fremont River.
