Manzanita leaf lesions: red hemispheric distortions of many leaves on these hillside plants. Thought they might be galls of some sort; but they proved to be carmine 'bubbles' of the leaves...
It looks very much as if this sturdy dragon has been dipped in white paint.
Thanks for the help IDing this thing. I have always liked odd-ball plants, so this one fits fine. It is an eye-catcher and does stink to attract flies as pollinators as can be seen in the pics.
