I found this very large fungus in my wooded (mainly beech) back yard. It has been tentatively identified as "artist's conk" -- some sort of ganoderma. It's growing right out of the ground, not from a tree trunk or fallen log.
Displaying? as it flew between perches.
Hmmm.... seen in same area as indigo bunting. Is this just an odd angle of an indigo, or perhaps something else like a blue grosbeak?? Unfortunately, I believe this is the only photo I have of this individual.
Plenty of b-g gnatcatchers active today.
I found the nest before I found the bird, and at first I thought it was a hummingbird's. But then the gnatcatcher hopped on into it! First of two gnatchatcher nests we saw on this walk. What a treat!
