Unfortunate roadkill.
Oddly, one of two only 1/2 mile apart.
This coot was sitting in the road in the opposite lane I was traveling in. I stopped, turned my vehicle around and managed to entice it to move out of the roadway (it was still dark that morning, and the fowl could not be easily seen).
I assume it was injured or sick, and managed to scoot away quickly when I approached it, but it was not inclined to move at all until I was close.
There was no blood on the road under it, nor did there appear to be any fishing line attached to it when it scurried away. It was nowhere to be seen in the area later that evening, so I am hoping it survived.
They are feeding on a carcass of a deer that had been hit by a vehicle.
My seven-year-old calls this a "bounty hunter" woodpecker.
A flock of around 100 flying hundreds of feet high.
In the fall we saw hundreds more flying thousands of feet high.
Love their sound!
A little over 1cm long.
Bioluminescent.
The kids love hunting and finding these.
juvenile box turtle found uninjured in parking lot. Immediately released.
Scytodes Thoracica, maybe.
Approx. 1.25cm including legs.
I need to try to remember to add a dime to the photo for size reference.....
Could be Triangulate Cobweb Spider.....
Approx. 1cm, no bigger than 1.5cm front to back, including legs.
Lovely large patch of these in our back yard. We rarely see these anywhere else.
This is a new nest being built in a tree about 100 feet from our chicken coop. Our chickens free-range quite a bit, and do not seem to be disturbed by the new neighbors.
Photo-wise this is not the best, with the branch in the face, etc., but we are trying to disturb as little as possible.
