A Snowy Owl on the rocks at Sachuest Point NWR. The amount of barring I think suggests an immature bird.
A Blackpoll Warbler at Miantonomi Memorial Park.
A first summer male Orchard Oriole at Miantonomi Memorial Park.
Small flock feeding in the seaweed at the surf line, at low tide.
Group size <20 individuals
A male Eurasian Green-winged Teal at Braman's Lane Pond. Note the lack of the vertical white bar on the breast.
A pair of Northern Shovelers at Braman's Lane Pond.
Young juvenile washed up to New England on the gulf stream.
A very rare east coast vagrant at Marsh Meadows Wildlife Preserve in Jamestown, RI. Strong eyebrow, greenish-yellow legs, slightly stouter bill than a Lesser Yellowlegs, and conspicuous tail bobbing. This bird attracted many birders from all over the region (some from as far as NY and NH)
Here is a link to a video that someone else took that demonstrates the tail bobbing behavior.
A group of Greater Scaup at Sachuest Point NWR.
A group of House Finches at Sachuest Point NWR. The bright localized red coloration with strong breast streaking distinguishes them from Purple Finches (for males).
A Snowy Owl on the Island Rocks at Sachuest Point NWR. It was too far for my lens, so I tried to digi-scope it using one of the public scopes provided on the overlook deck. The results weren't exactly great, but it's the best I could do under the circumstances. This particular owl has been around for several days now and seems to like this spot on the rock islands, but it's the first time I've manged to see it. Starting back in late November there have been at least a couple Snowy Owls sighted occasionally in southern RI, and this seems to be a favorite spot for one of them (perhaps the same owl).
A Dovekie at Sachuest Point NWR. Unfortunately, I think it was probably injured since it was way up on the trail. I saw some people pick it up and move it from one side of the trail to the other. It then tried to take off, but only manged to skitter across the ground for a little way.
A Common Goldeneye swimming just offshore at Sachuest Point NWR.
A couple of male Harlequin Ducks off the rocks at Sachuest Point NWR.
A male Common Eider off the rocks at Sachuest Point NWR.
A group of 5 American Avocets at Easton's/First Beach in Newport. Very rare to have a group like this here, it was quite the local birding event.
