Common Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) leaves [top and bottom] and flower buds prior to opening - in a field behind our house in the Town of Manchester, Ontario County, NY on August 17. This aromatic mugwort is native to Eurasia, north Africa and Alaska. Elsewhere, it's a highly invasive alien weed. Numerous other species in the genus Artemisia are also called mugworts. They all belong to the Asteraceae, or Composite family, in the Order Asterales.
