Eastern Painted Turtles are water turtles. They can grow up to nine inches long. They are black with smooth, flattened shells. The top part of this turtle's shell is called a carapace. The carapace has many small plates called scutes. The Eastern Painted Turtle has thick lines between its scutes. This turtle also has red markings around the edges of its carapace. It also has orange/yellow stripes along around its head/neck.
Red-eared Slider, which looks similar to the painted turtle. The carapace (top shell) of the Red-eared Slider is higher domed than that of the Painted Turtle. This Slider has yellow marginal scutes, a yellow plastron covered in dark, blotchy markings, and a red ear mark located just behind the eye. The head, neck, and legs are greenish with yellow stripes. The olive/brown carapace has yellow and black longitudinal bands and stripes.
