seen at the Benson Rotary Fishing Derby on Lake Bomoseen on Feb 22, open to all state lakes
i know, i know... not a living organism. But... quarter sized hail in Vermont isn't all that common! This was in 2011 in the summer of many severe thunderstorms leading up to Irene... incredible lightning, hail, and downpours followed by an immense flood caused by a tropical storm. I've noticed after hurricanes (Irene was a powerful hurricane until it hit land)... the weather pattern often changes dramatically. After Irene it was warm and dry for quite some time.
sycamores along the Middlebury River right before Irene hit. The Irene flooding blew many of them out, but that's what sycamores are adapted for, i'm sure they are already recolonizing, at least in the areas not ruined by less than wise people with bulldozers
Surprised to see only one! ...wonder how blurry this image will be...
in front of the white pine.
Is this a Bobolink bird nest? I found it in the grass on a stream bank.
I was alerted to its presence by the feathers of its prey falling down from above.
