female American Avocet
There were 2 AMAVs blown up to New England by a passing tropical storm. The other was a male, which had been observed at Salisbury Beach SP, just across the state line.
This AMAV was not bothered by photographers, and worked her way back and forth across the near shore, coming as close as 4 feet from this photographer. Her interest was in foraging for food; she rarely lifted her gaze from the water.

Male foraging for insects amongst the stranded seaweed on the cobble shore. This bird overwintered (2011-2012) at Odiorne Point State Park, providing a longterm opportunity for birders across the region.
He initially was taking shelter in a small cave of boulders, but was later frequenting a lobster trap. He was keeping company with a Song Sparrow, who fed and sheltered in the same vicinity. Enthusiasts eventually gathered other lobster traps from the beach, providing the warbler with an expansive and secure shelter for the winter. This photo shows the CMWA at one of his frequent perches -- the 'front entrance' if you please.
I returned to observe this bird 3 times over that winter.
RTLO are commonly seen in the Seabrook Harbor channel, but this one was close to shore off of Little Boars Head.
Several white, tubular chambers stacked like cord wood and affixed to a stem of my Aronia shrub. Opening up one of the chambers, I could see a gray, larval body. What are these?
