The swifts arrived today!!! Quite late this year, and rather than a few showing up some days or a week before the main migration wave arrives, this time they appeared all at once.
The previous weeks had seen fairly mild day temperatures but rather cold night temperatures, and it's only since 2 days ago that night temperatures have risen.

These birds are frequently heard "screaming" as they fly over villages in the evening.
Common Swifts in Chania. There were many hundreds of swifts seen every day for the three days we were there. The birds were nesting in the tiled roofs of the buildings around the old Venetian harbor. Apparently it was not uncommon to find the fledglings on the ground unable to take off. Our hotelier would nurse them and release them from the roof of the hotel.
