Straight-stalked Entoloma (Entoloma strictius)

Description

Cap: 2.25 inch (6.5 cm) across. Flat, shield shape, obtusely umbonate ( bump at center ). Fine radially fibrous on top. Dull buff-brown on mature cap, darker at center. In the photos, the color of the cap changes with the angle and with and without flash - light conditions were dim late afternoon.

Flesh: Thin in cap (1 mm ave.) with 3 layers - top fibrous, middle lighter, toward middle and above gills darker than layer 2 or gills. See photos

Gills:Thick, 7-8 mm (breadth), flesh colored (Anglo-saxon flesh) with some spots. Arcuate-decurrent ( see photos).

Stalk: 3.25 inches long (8 cm) Colored like Cap. Hollow, fibrous but not brittle. No liquid coming out when broken. Slightly twisted. Thickest at center and then at apex.

Staining - none noticed due to cutting.

Odor and Taste: mild, pleasant, not mushroom smell. Not tasted.

Spore Print Color: pinkish brown

Spore Smooth, 6 sided - irregular, angular, polygon, pinkish brown.

Habitat/Fruiting: on ground next to stream near mosses but in leaf leaf litter. Growing from ground, white mycelium at base. Solitary. Growing under winged Elm and several mature Oaks. Nearest pine tree was about 40 feet away. It had rained in the morning.

Mycellium: white.

ID'd using "Mushrooms of the Southeastern United States".
