This discovery was the most amazing of my trip-- Japanese Giant Salamander (Andrias japonicus), 3” eggs in a garden pond by a shrine at Hiraizumi. Fortunately the woman selling souvenirs by the pond identified them for us, and I learned online this nocturnal salamander is protected as a national treasure as it's so rare, millions of years old, and 5' long!
