This species was formerly known as Podarcis hispanicus type 1, with this subspecies being known as type 1A. Easily distinguished from the only other Podarcis species that occurs in Portugal north of the Douro, Podarcis bocagei, by the discontinuous dorsolateral stripes and rather flat head.
