Off the main road between Bahia Solano and El Valle, Colombia (heading S. 1 mile past the airport, on the right). Pretty close to the road.
Taxonomy: Ramphastos sanguineus Gould, 1854, no locality = San José, western Colombia.
Usually considered conspecific with P. torquatus and P. erythropygius, but differs from former in its long black line above cutting edge of upper mandible, with yellow tip of upper and (usually) lower mandible (3); 8–9 rather shallow (vs 5–7 relatively pronounced) tomial teeth (2); lack of narrow chestnut nuchal collar (2); narrow hybrid zone with both P. t. torquatus in E Panama and NW Colombia and P. t. nuchalis in N Colombia (2). For differences from P. erythropygius see that species. Monotypic.
