Worthen's Sparrow
Tanque de Emergencia,
Coahuila, Mexico
5 October 1990
Ro Wauer and I were on a Mexico trip in Sept. and Oct. 1990. One of the goals of this trip was net some Worthen's Sparrows in a spot we knew they could be found. There are a few shots of a hand-held bird posted here. This is apparently a 1st winter bird, so not fully mature. We saw at least 8 Worthen's Sparrows this day. There will be one other record of this species from 1994. I co-authored a paper in an ornithological journal in 1997 about this bird and its distribution in northern Mexico. That paper is cited below.
Behrstock, Robert A., Charles W. Sexton, Greg W. Lasley, Ted L. Eubanks, and John P. Gee. 1997. First nesting records of Worthen’s Sparrow Spizella wortheni for Nuevo Leon, Mexico, with a habitat characterization of the nest site and notes on ecology, voice, additional recent sightings and leg coloration. Cotinga 8: 27-33.
