Description

This is a female Hawaiian monk seal (Monachus schauinslandi) or ‘ilio-holo-i-ka-ua-ua in the Hawaiian language. (The Hawaiian literally translates to "dog that runs in the rough sea.") The numbers of this species have been declining rapidly since the 1980s, and now about 1100 total individuals remain, but the cause of the decline is not known. The Caribbean monk seal (M. tropicalis) is extinct.
