Description

Texas, USA

Tibicen resh
Brazos Co., Texas
1998-2003

Often confused with T. pronotalis (=T. wlakeri), T. resh is a bit smaller, has paired pruinose spots at the base of the abdomen and a more silvery pruinose appearance to the abdomen.

Also commonly confused with T.pruinosus.

This species is native to eastern Texas and ranges along the Gulf coast to the city of New Orleans. In New Orleans, it is most abundant in the older parts of the city (higher ground) and in areas where there are lots of large oaks (Q. virginiana/geminata). It does cross the Mississippi River!; intensive collecting efforts between New Orleans & Biloxi have revealed a more eastern distribution for this species.

This cicada seems most abundant in oak forests/woodlands where its cast shells along with the males songs (similar to that of auletes) high up in the trees are indicative of its presence and abundance.
