Gambel's White-crowned Sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys ssp. gambelii)

Observer

rjadams55

Date

January 24, 2016

Description

This individual was part of a larger mixed-species sparrow flock feeding in the blackberries and brush behind the mission. Its ID as a Gambel's White-crowned is based on its pale lores, orange-yellow bill, grey stripes on its back, and its long primary extension. This subspecies is common in San Benito County in the winter, but is much more prevalent in open grasslands over riparian brush.
