I had had a fabulous day birding in Viera Florida (at the waste water treatment plant's settling ponds!!!). I was riding high after seeing and photographing a male Masked Duck, which is a 'life bird' -- a bird one expects to see only once in their lifetime. As I left the WWTP and headed back for the Interstate, lo and behold! A pair of Sand Hill Cranes picking grain in a field adjacent to the road!! The winds had picked up and the sun was getting low, but I caught this male looking up and into the sun. He was almost 5 feet tall, which totally astounded me.
