Description

This Small Winter Stonefly (Family Capniidae, Genus Allocapnia) was seen just a few meters away from some open water along Dickson Brook. My trusty Swiss Army Knife ruler tells me it was between 7.5 and 8 mm long, minus the cerci at the end of the tail. I think that means this is either Allocapnia pygmaea or A. recta. A. recta is supposed to be the first to emerge in the spring, and this was certainly early. I saw at least thee individuals. Allocapnia pygmaea is known for the park. Allocapnia recta is not known for New Brunswick yet, but it is present in neighbouring Nova Scotia, Maine and Quebec.
