The size of the basidiome in the preserved specimen for this observation is slightly smaller than Largent’s listed size range. However, the second specimen (which was in bad shape and thus not preserved) is more robust.
Supporting macro characteristics include the aging of the lamellae to a rather brownish color (“pinkish cinnamon” in Largent), the slightly yellow flesh in the stipe (especially when drying after exposure), and the subdistant to distant lamellar spacing, with very distinct and limited lamellulae.
These fruited in two different locations on campus simultanously, both under redwood. The first specimen was in a VERY dark spot, hard against the inner part of an large, burned-out redwood stump surrounded by a dense group of smaller redwoods. 2-3 other species of Leptonia were found under this same tree.
