This is the type locality for the species Costus vargasii. I found the plant there just as described by Paul Maas who described and named the species in 1990. It is similar to the cultivar 'Raspberry Yogurt' but different from the plants of the same species found across the river in primary forest. This area along the road above Atalaya has several different Costus that appear to have introgressed or developed as natural hybrids.
