Bornean Elephant (Elephas maximus ssp. borneensis)

Observer

Date

June 2011

Description

Several Bornean pygmy elephants were seen on the western river bank. We were able to approach the bank from a small river craft and view the elephants dining on tree foliage at a range of about five metres. The Bornean pygmy elephant should be designated as a valid subspecies and classified as Critically Endangered; there may be fewer than one thousand of these creatures in the wild, most of which seem to be in Sabah.
