for context, see daily account for 3/31 at Trail of Shadows, Longmire. we puzzled over this tree for a while, but the tips of the needles were too pointy (and the needle length not variable enough) to be hemlock. finally determined that it was a western yew. there are currently no cones on the tree. this tree is a conifer.
