Description

Here is Orobanche californica or California Broomrape, a parasitic plant growing in the sand near the lighthouse at the end of Point Wilson. The lavender blossoms caught my eye, and I'd never seen a plant like this before, just a clump of trumpet-shaped flowers without leaves. Then I noticed about two dozen clumps, each about 3-5" across and 2" high, with each blossom about 1" long. I was surprised not to find this native plant in my excellent field guide by Pojar and MacKinnon.
