Perched, trying to ventilate and cool down in the midday heat.
Bizarre-looking thermoregulatory behavior from the great blue heron, keeping cool. We were in a kayak and as we rounded this rock island, we were flummoxed into how it was holding its wings. Basically, it created an open bowl, somewhat like if we interlocked our fingers with our palms facing up.
Very cool to see.
This is a reach, but maybe a juvenile hooded merganser?
Odd to see only a solitary one.
Displaying on a forest edge.
