CoastBlitz New Plymouth

CoastBlitz is a BioBlitz on the coast. It aims to explore and document what lives there.

Here’s how it works:
• Go to one of the CoastBlitz areas (or set up your own).
• Take photos of things that live there (using any camera, iPhone, iPad).
• Upload your photos to the CoastBlitz project on NatureWatch NZ using any computer or direct from iPhone/iPad.

Download the set of instructions, plus the map for your chosen area and follow the links to useful identification resources. If you’d like to start up a new CoastBlitz site at an area near you it’s easy to do. Just drop us a line and we can set up the new area in NatureWatchNZ for you. In most cases the same instructions and resources you see here will be all you need to run CoastBlitz activities, or a one-off event.

About CoastBlitz
CoastBlitz is a type of BioBlitz. They are an ideal educational activity for groups of any size and we also collect real data for monitoring over the long term via the NatureWatchNZ 'citizen science' platform. The main topic is 'what lives at your beach?'
The format is very easy to run thanks partly to the unique features of NatureWatchNZ including the "ID Please" function to help you out with any species ID. It can be combined with other activities including more structured fieldwork or lessons during a visit to the beach, or by combining with a Beach Clean-up for a hands-on event. The same basic activity can be run at different levels to suit different age groups or time available.
