Each year, lots of people all around the country get out and count kererū (New Zealand wood pigeon) in their neighbourhoods. These kererū counts are run annually by Forest & Bird's Kiwi Conservation Club with support from the Kererū Discovery project, as well as Kaupapa Kererū's Banks Peninsula count every two years. In 2014, the great kereru count is from 22 September to 5 October. You can add observations to NatureWatch NZ directly here at any time, and also via the Kiwi Conservation Club's kereru count webpage during the official count. Please look in the "Terms & Rules" for some simple suggestions on how to make your observations of more value to scientists. All of the past data from these counts are being accumulated in NatureWatch NZ, both in this project for the national counts and in the Kaupapa Kererū Banks Peninsula project. Everyone is encouraged to keep adding your kererū observations at other times of the year to give us a better idea of where these birds are and what they're up to. Kererū or New Zealand wood pigeon are an iconic native bird species that has become less common in parts of New Zealand in recent decades. The birds are also really important for dispersing the seeds of some native trees, and have cultural importance for Maori.
