This species is known from Lagoa Santa, Belo Horizonte and Serra do Caraça, at 700-900m asl in the southern part of the state of Minas Gerais, in south-eastern Brazil. It could occur in other places, but it has not so far been discovered elsewhere.
Two of the three known populations disappeared in the mid 1980s, the surviving population is from Serra do Caraça, with records dating from 2001-2002.
There has been a huge urban expansion within this species' known range, with much forest being lost, and streams becoming polluted.
This species disappeared from a protected area in Belo Horizonte. It is, however, still present at the Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural Santuário do Caraça (Canelas and Bertoluci, 2007).
Listed as Data Deficient in view of the absence of recent information on its extent of occurrence, status and ecological requirements.
