The landscape transformations that have occurred and continue to happen in Eastern Africa and indeed in Kenya have resulted in displacement, fragmentation of populations of mammals species. Since Stewart attempt to map distribution of large mammals in 1963, there's limited information on which species is where.In conservation, getting to 'know what species is where' is the most critical and a prerequisite step towards effective management.
The objective of this project-Mammals of Kenya is get to know which mammal is where. More importantly it seeks to elicit public (expert or otherwise) participation in gathering and using the data in order to promote their appreciation of mammals and resolve to conserve them in their natural habitats-man and nature in harmony!
The project is based at National Museums of Kenya (NMK) jointly managed by Nature Kenya's Mammal committee (NK) both of which are non-profit public institutions dedicated to heritage conservation. Generated information will be used only for scientific and public education purposes,not for sale.
