Melbourne BioBlitz offers an opportunity to discover, identify and record the plants and animals living in and around backyards, parks and streetscapes in the City of Melbourne. By participating in Melbourne BioBlitz, you will:
• Get to know the plants and animals that live in Melbourne’s urban and green environments
• Contribute to the City of Melbourne’s new Urban Ecology and Biodiversity Strategy which aims to improve the way the City manages and supports nature
• Have fun by using your camera or mobile device to share and swap nature stories and pictures whilst participating in the City’s largest ever species discovery program
• Get to meet new people including scientists, amateur naturalists and city rangers who look after Melbourne’s unique wildlife
Melbourne BioBlitz is a partnership between the City of Melbourne, Earthwatch Australia and Museum Victoria in collaboration with the Australian Research Centre for Urban Ecology, the University of Melbourne, RMIT, and the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne and is founded on the concept of a ‘community bioblitz’ - rapid biodiversity surveys carried out by the community, amateur naturalists and professionals within a given location over a short period of time.
Over the course of four weeks from 31st October to 30th November 2014, the public will work alongside professional and amateur naturalists to discover Melbourne’s biodiversity and produce a comprehensive list of species living within the City of Melbourne municipality.
