Mission Macrocystis

Share your sightings of Giant Kelp! Giant Kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) makes up marine forests and contributes to vital ecosystems, but has been declining over the last few decades due to climate change. Giant Kelp can still be found along the Victorian Coast, yet we know so little about it in this state. This project aims to record and monitor Macrocystis sites and associated marine life along the Victorian coastline. The patches that remain are protected under Australia's national environmental law, the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) as a threatened ecological community. less ↑
