The Nevada Naturalist Program, sponsored by the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension in partnership with various Federal, State, and local agencies, is an environmental education program geared for any adult interested in learning about natural resources in southern Nevada.
This site provides the opportunity for Nevada Naturalists to discover, identify, and record their observations of plants and animals living in southern Nevada.
Southern Nevada generally consists of 5 counties: Clark, Esmeralda, Lincoln, Mineral, and Nye. When combined, they form a total regional area of roughly 43,765 square miles. Major cities within this area include: Beatty, Boulder City, Hawthorne, Henderson, Las Vegas, Laughlin, North Las Vegas, Mesquite, Pahrump, Paradise, Pioche, and Tonopah.
The Mojave Desert and Great Basin Desert cover all or most of Southern Nevada. Manmade lakes (Lake Mead and Lake Las Vegas), seasonal, and dry lakes (Ivanpah Dry Lake) periodically dot the landscape.
