Tuesday, June 16th
9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Meet at the Palou Phelps Mini Park playground located on Palou Avenue between Dunsee and Phelps Street.
A Blitz With an Important Mission:
Palou Phelps Open Space is a precious natural resource located in the Bay View District of San Francisco. We invite families with children of all ages to take part in this Bioblitz – a free educational opportunity to experience this unique natural area located in a very urban part of San Francisco.
Scientists and volunteers alike will document every living thing in Palou Phelps Natural Area. This exciting event will highlight the richness of the environment where we live, play, and work. And what’s more? We will learn how we co-exist with all the other living things – even in the midst of a highly populated urban area. We will look for birds, mammals, wild bees and pollinators, butterflies, wildflowers, coastal scrub plants, and more. You will be amazed to learn how much life this park contains.
What’s the important mission? The City of San Francisco is currently reviewing a building permit for for private property at the top of the hill at Palou Phelps Open Space. If the permit is granted, not only will this irreplaceable grassland be lost forever, but an access roadway will be built on DPW public land to facilitate construction.
Let’s gather together for a fun day of nature discovery to record local wildlife in this area, congregating as a community to both discover the importance of this resource as a biologically diverse area as well as show support for the preservation of this land for many future generations to enjoy.
