Project Phoenix: learning about bird reponses to smoke from wild fires

A community science project called Project Phoenix begins today, Aug. 1: it concerns birds in California and their distribution during times of smoky wildfires and clear skies. It is the creation of UCLA & Natural History Museum joint postdoctoral researcher, Olivia Sanderfoot.

https://www.project-phoenix-investigating-bird-responses-to-smoke.org/

The project aims to have observers note birds in their neighborhood for 10 minutes a week through the most fire-prone months of the year (August–October). These data will then be analyzed to learn more about bird responses to smoke from wildfires. Beginner birders are welcome and encouraged to participate – no previous birding experience is required.

SnailBlitz 2023!

It is that time of year again! From February 1 through March 31, 2023, all iNaturalist land snail and slug observations from Southern California will be added to the project SnailBlitz 2023. We, at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, hope to reach at least 1,250 photos and observations. These will help us learn more about these under-studied creatures in various SoCal habitats.

Tribute to BJ Stacey, iNaturalist user 'Finatic'

Nature has lost a great ally. BJ Stacey (iNaturalist user: Finatic) passed away on Feb. 24th after a long battle with cancer. BJ was a prolific contributor to the SLIME project and documented 39 species of native, rare, and introduced taxa. He made an astonishing 105,027 iNaturalist observations and nearly as many identifications. BJ was a tremendously knowledgeable field biologist and a kind and generous colleague. His documentation of biodiversity will enable a better understanding of Southern California biota for many decades to come. BJ will be fondly remembered and profoundly missed.

At home or out in nature (still)

With the continued restrictions due to the coronavirus and Covid-19, I hope that iNaturalist is serving as an enriching place for learning about biodiversity and sharing observations. Stay healthy.

At home or out in nature

During this coronavirus 'stay at home' situation, I hope iNaturalist is serving as an enriching place for learning about biodiversity and sharing observations. The recent rains and cool weather make it a good time for finding snails and slugs. I hope you do! Stay healthy.

Rain in March!

With rain in the forecast, please keep a keen eye out for snails and slugs. Although mostly nocturnal, they'll come out when the ground is wet, even in the day. They'll be more common in the leaf litter too. I look forward to your observations!
