Small mammals of California

While small mammals are often overlooked or considered pests, they play incredibly important roles in their environments. They can shape their communities by building burrows, eating insects, preying on and dispersing seeds, and acting as prey items for other animals. There are several definitions for what qualifies as a 'small mammal' but for the purpose of this project they include rodents and insectivores (shrews and moles).
