More information is needed about the badger status in the Point Reyes National Shoreline area. Badgers are threatened by agriculture, as they are seen as pests due to their burrows having the ability to disrupt irrigation, hurt livestock and damages to vehicles. They are also threatened by the sprawl of urbanization, destroying the grassland they live on. Point Reyes protects the badgers from most of these disturbances but the rest of California does not. Although the badger is listed as a California species of special concern and cannot be hunted. By documenting sightings of the North American Badger, the park will be better prepared to help these animals. The presence of badgers shows a healthy ecosystem as other animals, such as Red-tailed hawks and owls feed on the same prey, so if a healthy number of badgers are present, that could mean a healthy balance of animals are in the ecosystem.
