At present, 17 extant species of pig are recognized in the family Suidae, although the taxonomy of some taxa requires further work, especially in the Philippines. Even without additional species this is a species-rich family, reflecting the evolutionary success, ecological versatility, and the extensive dispersal ability of pigs.
However, some of these species are highly threatened with extinction in the wild, even though we know very little about them.
We ask for your help in reporting any wild pig sightings anywhere in the world, but especially your records from Africa and Asia. Descriptions of the different species can be found at the IUCN/SSC Wild Pig Specialist Group website.
