A pair of medium-large kingfishers with grey heads and chestnut bellies, and prominent orange-red bills, photographed repeatedly in treetops along the Niger River.
This is a woodland non-aquatic kingfisher. Note the grasshopper in its mouth.
Seen on road from Nkhotakota to Zambia. The only wildlife observed on entire passage through the protected area.
The Grey-headed Kingfisher (Halcyon leucocephala) has a wide distribution from the Cape Verde Islands off the north-west coast of Africa to Mauritania, Senegal and Gambia, east to Ethiopia, Somalia and southern Arabia and south to South Africa.
